Goodbye, NFL

I don’t have strong feelings about Rush Limbaugh one way of the other, but I do have strong feelings about political discourse. The NFL has banned Mr. Limbaugh, because he is an outspoken conservative. I am a conservative. I have a right to be a conservative, and I have a right to express conservative viewpoints. If the NFL doesn’t want conservatives, then I’m out. I consider myself banned for life. Not one more down.

I do have strong feelings about football. I played football from the time I was 6 until I was 21. I have coached football. I love football. But, I love open political discourse (and, truth be told, college football) more. So, goodbye, NFL. I’ll occupy that NFL netherworld where the Oilers still suit up, Earl Campbell rumbles like a freight train, and Mike Renfro (again) gets both feet in bounds to win the AFC championship. Eat that, Rep. Hughes and other need-to-get-a-life Steelers fans!

I don't particularly care for Limbaugh, but the NFL is imbecilic in this instance. Probably just because once upon a time Limbaugh said that a certain black quarterback really wasn't that good.

I like college football a LOT more than NFL, anyway, though.

Earth to Urquhart. Type Rush Limbaugh Racist in the Google Search Engine and see the result.

To me it is unbelievable that an elected public servant in Utah would voice support for Limbaugh's right to spew his hateful, racist, bigoted comments on the public airways.

To see an example of Limbaugh's views on African Americans go to this link. http://newsone.com/obama/top-10-racist-limbaugh-quotes/

Earthling,

Did you notice that people already have apologized for attributing to Mr. Limbaugh smoking guns 1 and 2 from your list, because they apparently were made up? I'm shocked that a commenter on SteveU.com would cite such a source.

I have no idea how much you follow the NFL. But, other than New Orleans, the league isn't exactly a pious refuge for saints. Clearly, the NFL went after Mr. Limbaugh for his political viewpoints.

But, let's assume you're right. This isn't about political views. Commissioner Goodell actually has ushered in a new, politically-neutral "high standard" of conduct requirement. And, before the Superbowl, at least 40 players, coaches and owners also will be banned from the league for conduct unbecoming a footballer.

And if Al Gore or Bill Clinton wanted to buy an NFL team, you'd have nothing to say about it, right?

Me? Of course I'd have nothing to say about it. I've never blogged a sentence about any official's legitimate business interests. Why would I care?

Senator Urquhart wrote that the NFL has banned Rush Limbaugh because he is "an outspoken conservative". Then he defends "outspoken conservatives" since he claims to be one himself.

Perhaps two of the racist quotes attributed to Limbaugh cannot be proven. Even if he didn't say those things, he could have. Those statements fit right in with the rest of his racist hate-filled comments about blacks that can be proven. The fact that the two quotes in question cannot be verified in no way dismisses the years of racist, bigoted, hateful rhetoric that has come out of this blowhard's mouth on the airwaves of America. It is not too much of a stretch to think that this might have had something to do with the NFL's rejection as well.

Check this link out Senator and see the type of individual you are in bed with. (Perhaps you know the words to "Barack the Magic Negro" yourself.)

JB,

I conceded the point. Goodell has imposed a politically-neutral "high standard" rule of conduct. I've moved on, and am now waiting to see its effect on a league where 1 out of 5 players has been charged with a serious crime. In fact, I jogged around the block this morning; with so much talent soon to be banned from the league, I might make a comeback.

I'm trying to decide which story I care about less - the balloon boy, or Rush Limbaugh and the NFL. More importantly, did Rolly get the story right about the homeless family you helped with a motel room? If so, I'm impressed!

JBTalcott,

So those quotes are "fake, but accurate." Where have we heard that before?

Brock please read what I wrote and stop twisting my words. You used that phrase,I did not.

I apologize, I errantly used quotation marks.

You wrote, "Even if he didn't say those things, he could have. Those statements fit right in with the rest of his racist hate-filled comments about blacks that can be proven."

So, in other words, you wrote that Limbaugh's quotes were fake, but accurate. That was the point I was trying to make.

Ok Brock, I get your point. My post would have more clearly expressed my view had I said,

Perhaps two of the racist quotes attributed to Limbaugh cannot be proven. Even if he didn't actually say those things, that language would not be out of character for him since those statements fit right in with the rest of his racist hate-filled comments about blacks that can be proven.

Is that better?
