Breaking News: VP Change

Liberals are speculating whether there will be a VP change, in light of revelations that Sarah Palin's 17-year old daughter is pregnant.

I just saw Gov. Palin's convention speech. It is clear that there has to be a VP change.

Biden will be gone by Friday.

Don't be so quick my old friend Steve. True, she gave an impashioned speech. She appealled to her base. She showed herself to be an effective attack dog. But she also was a book banner in her home town, a person who used the prayers and will of God to enable gas pipelines from her strongest supporters and contributors.

I think the public will see the contrast between the ideological extremist that is Palin, and the rational thoughtful VP candidate that is Biden. Palin appealed to the worst in America, and reinforced the base. It gave her traction for a race she is unsuited for. For when the teleprompters are gone, so will her wit dissipate into the angry little evangelical that believes in a 6,000 year old earth, a wrathful God, and a belief that her radical agenda has been endorsed by the angry God that endorses her radical agenda.

When she gets cornered on her radical irrational beliefs, I hope you are willing to admit that she isn't ready to be President.

I've spent a good deal of time reading your blog for more than a year now. I usually respect your view on the matters that you discuss. You usually strike me as being forthwith and level-headed.

You are so dismissive of liberal politics and, of late, Obama and Biden. I don't get it at all. It's one thing to disagree with their politics. It's an entirely different thing to be glib and sarcastic. I respect the former, but lately you've been prone to the latter.

Your comment directly above my first comment is exactly what I'm talking about. It makes me feel less inclined to continue reading what you write.

Mike,

Thanks. I intend to be pointed and humorous -- but not glib. It's a fine line, and I really do appreciate it when people help set a good tone for this blog. Obi Wan dishes it out plenty here (for which I'm grateful), and I'm confident he can take the jab and return fire.

I do take this stuff very seriously (but, hopefully, not in a too crazy way). And I do want to make points clearly and crisply.

You mention dismissiveness. That's the point of this blog post. Liberals are brutally dismissive of an amazing woman who has shown amazing courage and has climbed very high on her own. The dismissive and sexist talk about her should stop. Biden is no Palin. And, even more so, Obama is no Palin.

In a previous post, I hinted that your credibility was a bit shaky due to some of your recent musings.

With this newly added "analysis", Steve, it's fair to say your credibility is gone... whisked away to the same place McCain's campaign advisers have left their strategy scruples. This was a huge mistake. And impassioned speeches aside, Palin is a joke. Simply, McCain's plans were jolted by an unexpected No from a more viable candidate, and to continue with the planned announcement in the hopes of killing Obama's convention bounce, they grasped at a straw, and got one.

Let's say that as a Democrat, I am eagerly awaiting the first VEEP debate with not so much fear, but rather giddiness. Biden vs. Palin. There will be no better teevee this cycle, hands down.

Saw the Palin speech last night, you guys really rallied round the family. Unfortunately. it wasn't the most compelling speech in Minneapolis this week.

I'm sure that Biden will know exactly how to attack Governor Palin's experience.

He'll just use the same lines he had for Obama.

It's amazing how the democrats have condemned Bush for turning over foreign policy to his VP (Cheney), while Obama is essentially admitting that he will turn foreign policy over to his VP (Biden) as well.

Obi Wan and Mike,

I guess ultimately we won't know if Palin was the best choice until November 5th, but I'm pretty impressed at this point. I just get a kick out of the Dems' attacks on her lack of experience. Have either of YOU ever been elected to a public office? She's been a city council member, mayor, and a governor. I don't care how large the town/city/state -- it takes work and talent to get elected, re-elected, and do a good job while in office. Word gets around if you're a doer - or a talker only - especially in a small town/state.

Palin has run a city - small though it may be. Sometimes smaller means more work; you have fewer people to pawn duties on to. She's run a state and in two years done more than many governors do in two terms.

I like her. The Republican Party is now solidly behind her. And I couldn't help noticing that female media reps last night and this morning were also very impressed with Palin's speech. Although I don't expect the most liberal Hillary supporters to come over to the right side of the force (vs. the dark side, Obi Wan - ha,ha,ha), I really think there are a lot of middle-of-the-roaders and women generally who are going to connect with Palin. And they already know McCain and will remember that they like his maverick style.

And by the way, Mike, don't be all critical of Steve's style and wit. That's what makes this stuff fun. Steve is righ - this is a good ticket. The Dems are worried, and they should be. Not that I'm predicting a landslide Republican win, but I do predict a Republican win . . . in a year that by all accounts really could have been the Dems' in a big way.

Steve,

Oh, by the way, I just have to say I think Obama really should consider a VP change. I loved Rudy's speech last night. He had some great one-liners. One was when he was talking about all of Obama's flip-flops and he mentioned that Joe Biden really ought to get his VP offer in writing! If you saw it, you know it brought down the house!

If I were Obama, I'd dump Biden right now and get Hillary as my VP. That's all he had to do, but he couldn't do it. He's too arrogant. Granted she comes with TONS of baggage, but seriously - that's all Obama had to do, and they're in the White House.

Now they have to deal with the situation where the Repubs have a real chance to win in November! That's why they're in panick attack mode.

Jon,

Just to be clear, I have no problem at all with Palin as a VP candidate. I think she seems like a very high quality person and has probably accomplished a great deal of good during her career. An attack on Palin or McCain, or even Republican politics in general, was not my point.

My point is that there is discussion and there is poking at people just to poke at people. Lately, it seems like Mr. Urquhart has been doing more poking than typical. That seems like a shift to me, having read all of his blog posts for more than a year now. That was my only point. I'm not saying that every word Steve writes should be serious or even well-considered. I am simply noting a stylistic change that I find less compelling. That's all.

Thanks.
