Crandall Canyon Mine
The hearts of all Utahns go out to the families that are suffering. Many issues must be addressed and many questions must be answered concerning the Crandall Canyon mine disaster. But, the political sideshow should stop; it helps nothing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw a little of the pot calling the kettle black in Huntsman's comments.
Huntsman is governor for one reason and one reason only: his daddy made a shipload of money in an industry that unavoidably pollutes the environment and exposes workers to hazardous conditions. (By unavoidably, I mean that no matter how hard they try, companies in these industries will still pollute and expose workers to hazardous condition to a certain level).
I don't agree with most of Huntsman's politics, and I'm not a native Utahn, so I don't know what has happened in the past. But, I do know that Huntsman has made some very good environmental decisions, including helping Utah stand up to Divine Strake. I respect him, even if I don't always agree. I fail to see how Huntsman's Dad's source of money has anything to do with the fact that Bob Murray's mouth needed to have some tape applied, and Huntsman did a good thing by speaking up. It wasn't about politics. It was about leadership.
Mr. Murray is a poster child for why CEO types should usually keep their mouths shut publicly and should hire competent communicators to handle public interfaces. And that pretty much goes for advertising as well. They should instead focus on doing what they do well: running their businesses.
The Governor's pot shots have not demonstrated leadership. Instead, they have come across as -- cheap shots. Unfortunately, it's the kind of 'leadership' I've come to expect from Utah's current Chief Executive.
Misty,
There definitely is a connection between Huntsman's criticisms of Murray and his family's wealth. I'll spell it out more clearly
- Huntsman is governor because of his father's accomplishments and wealth. No one argues that.
- Huntsman's family made money in an industry that unavoidably pollutes and exposes employees to hazardous conditions.
- Huntsman Chemical was frequently criticized (fairly or unfairly I don't know) for its environmental record.
Now, we have Huntsman saying "that guy" needs to spend every dollar he has to get those guys out. There are people living in Texas who probably wished that Huntsman had spent every dollar he had to clean up his plants.
It really is a case of the pot calling the kettle black, and yes, the daddy connection is relevant.

Then it doesn't seem to me this discussion helps.
