"Whatever you read, listen to, or watch makes an impression on you. Public entertainment and the media can provide you with much positive experience. They can uplift and inspire you, teach you good and moral principles, and bring you closer to the beauty this world offers. But they can also make what is wrong and evil look normal, exciting, and acceptable."
(With apologies to my DVR copy of the BYU-Utah football game last year - you're still my favorite)
Twelve Angry Men
The Fugitive
Chariots of Fire
The Hunt for Red October
West Side Story
A Month in the Country
Lawrence of Arabia
Hoosiers
Pride and Prejudice (A&E)
Stand and Deliver
Good list Craig. 12 Angry Men made my final 15, and I thought I should have either The Fugitive or The Bourne Identity for a thriller. My son loves to run, and just yesterday I was telling him about Chariots of Fire.
I haven't seen A Month in the County. But since Justin has already given me religion for the day, I'm good to stay home and watch it!
The Godfather (esp pt 1 and 3)
Silence of the Lambs
Schindler's List
Malcolm X
The Holy Grail
The Blues Brothers
The Ten Commandments
The Wizard of Oz
Animal House
The Sound of Music
Honorable mention:
Sleeping with the Enemy
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Major League
Dances With Wolves
Star Wars
Star Wars
It’s a Wonderful Life
Schindler’s List
Vertigo
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Psycho
Lawrence of Arabia
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
12 Angry Men
The Seven Samari
1. Glory (because all men are created equal regardless of race or any other of our differences)
2. Freedom Writers (It is critical that we all find the way that we can best make a positive difference in the world.)
3. Cars (In the end, it's our friends who get us through the rough spots.)
4. Life is Beautiful (Humor can get us through even the greatest devastation.)
5. Saving Private Ryan (The most gut-wrenchingly real war movie I've ever seen.)
6. Family Man (The most important organization in the world is family, even if we sometimes forget that.)
7. The Crossing (an intimate portrait of George Washington, the man, and the military leader)
8. Hotel Rwanda (shows the failure of foreign policy when it is not done correctly)
9. The Time of The Butterflies (because we should stand up for freedom, no matter what the cost.)
10. October Sky (Because we can become anything we want to, if we believe it enough.)
Ok, I'll play:
The Shawshank Redemption
The Godfather I
Groundhog Day
The Lord of the Rings- Return of the King
Star Wars (of course)
Henry V
Dave
City Lights
Patton
BTW, I also had Twelve Angry Men within my top 20.
Obiwan - Henry V and Patton are in my top 15. Nicely done.
Obi Wan,
I like your blog. We need more thoughtful commentary in the world and in this state.
Your list is good too. I know I should include Star Wars, but I'm going to remain obstinate on that one.
Frank,
Aren't you a Southern Utahn? And no nod to a film shot in Snow Canyon/Southern Utah?! Speaking of which, High School Musical II debuts August 17th!
Some of my favorites that I don't see listed above:
Ben Hur
The Great Escape
Casablanca
Wow! Are we taking ourselves too seriously? Where's "A Christmas Story"? Man, you guys are going to shoot your eyes out.
The SIMPSONS MOVIE is the best.
