Friends and the Written Word
It is hard to get to know someone until you've read their writing. I have found this to be true even with long-time friends. Because it tends to be a highly-focused activity, the written word reveals depth and perspective differently than conversation does.
I was delighted to find op-eds from 2 friends in today's Spectrum. The first is from Tad Trueblood about flying into Bagdad (2 weeks ago, I happened to be on the flight to Philadelphia with his wife Cindy when she was sending him off). Check out Tad's milblog. The second is from Glenn Mesa regarding better treatment of people with differing opinions.

Those were both interesting articles Steve but I had a few problems with the Mesa article about the street full of children disappearing because the family did not accept the predominant faith. This was at best an exaggeration. I mean, if there is a religion capable of a mass pull-out of an entire neighborhood it may be this one but being capable is a long way from taking such an action.
And Tony Von Hemet still writes to the local paper from wherever he moved, so luckily (sarcasm) we have not lost him in the paper. He moved to escape the death threats? I just question if that is the truth.
And where is this service where I can take a license plate down and then find everything about the car owner, even when you will be in a highly visible parking lot? The only thing this article left out was where Elvis is currently living.
Do we need to treat each other better? Absolutely! But I think this article was a big reach.
Shayne,
I can't say whether Glenn is accurate in his assessment. But, even if we need to throttle back his meter a bit, it is a good reminder that we should be more tolerant.
