Salt Lake Mayoral Race

Some excellent candidates are lining up to run for Salt Lake City mayor. SLC mayor is one of those interesting positions where a finite group of people elect someone who will take actions that ripple far beyond the boundaries of the City itself. The rest of us wish the citizens of SLC well in making a good choice.

Is that a not-so-subtle endorsement for Ralph Becker?

No endorsement. But I do think Ralph would be a good mayor.

The only reason I would hate to see Becker as Mayor is that it would take him out of the House! He's a Dem, so I don't always agree with him, but you couldn't ask for better judgment or higher ethics, and to me that's more important than mirroring my personal positions.

Becker would be such a contrast to Rocky. I'm probably not going to endorse anyone, but I agree with Rep. U that he would do a kick ass job.

Hey Steve,

Love the blog, but aren't you on the endorsement list for Becker?

I wasn't aware of that, but I'm fine with it. So, sure, this is my official not-so-subtle endorsement of Ralph.

I'll be sure to remind people in SLCo of your endorsement of an ineffective Democrat legislator the next time you run for office. Just how many bills has Becker passed since he has been in office?

Oh, and before someone gives me the old "Democrats can't pass legislation in a red state like Utah" excuse lets just take a look at some interesting numbers.

In the last 9-10 year (1996-2007) Patrice passed 46 of 54 bills introduced (84%). And as for Becker? He's passed 12 of 45 bills introduced (27%). How can anyone call that effective?

And contrast that with Patrice Arent

Anonymous,

No offense, but that analysis is just plain stupid. It assumes that each piece of legislation passed is of equal significance and that unpassed legislation is of no significance. We're not talking about Mehmet Okurs vs. Gordon Giricek's 3 point shooting percentage. There is often a great value that comes from discussions on pieces of legislation that DON'T pass and sometimes don't even make it out of committee.

Percentage of raw legislation passed means very little to me. Positive impacts on policy and discussion are what counts and by that standard Rep. Becker is fantastic. He is also a true Statesman and a steward of decorum, unlike Rocky Anderson.

He plays nice in the sandbox.

Wow. By your subjective measuring stick we should be giving Brent Goodfellow an award for doing absolutely nothing.

But lets be fair. I work and can't go to capitol everyday and listen to Ralph be the champion of good legislative dialogue. For all I know he sleeps at his desk! Show something measurable, tangible, or real.

I'm really not trying to tear into Ralph, because I agree with you about his personality and style. He's much more digestible than Rocky. Its just that if I'm going to vote for the guy I'd like to have a good reason for doing it.

I want ABR for mayor of SLC. ABR is my new friend Anyone But Rocky. Just like many voted for John Kerry in 2004 not for who he was but because he wasn't Bush, I would vote for anyone who was not Rocky. I know he is not running and I am excited about that.

Of course, I don't get a vote since I don't live in Salt Lake but I care who is mayor there and how he or she represemts the state too.

Anonymous, your arguments sound intelligent and interesting but for me they go out the window with your anonymity.

I also live and vote outside SLC, but find the Mayoral race interesting. Any comments on other candidates? How about Jenny Wilson. Is there a viable G.O.P. candidate?
