Proposed Amendment to Abortion Bill
Based on many conversations I've had, I am planning to run a substitute to Rep. Ray's abortion bill. The bill most likely will pass in some form, so the issue becomes the form in which it will pass.
Before I lock in language on my proposed substitute to Rep. Paul Ray’s abortion bill, I’d like to get public input. My proposed substitute can be found at Politicopia. It is proposed to insert a trigger, thus making the provisions effective when Roe v. Wade is overturned or the Constitution is changed.
In 1991, Utah footed the court bill to challenge Roe v. Wade. It is now another state's turn. Instead of spending the money on lawyers, my proposed substitution would spend the money on the Utah birth defects network and on early intevention.
Your thoughts?

I agree. South Dakota seems intent on taking on the cause; let's let them.
This is truly embarrassing. I'm so tired of Utah legislators wasting taxpayers' money on efforts to force their perceived "higher morals" on others. What if we took the resources used in these efforts and applied them to legislation addressing health care, funding for education, the high bankruptcy rate, the prescription drug addiction problem, obesity (both adults and children), pollution, lack of water, seat belts for both drivers and passengers (especially children, no exceptions!), and campaign reform to name a few? Utah is a state that receives more federal funding than is paid out in federal taxes and day after day I read how more federal funding is needed. And Utah is near the bottom nationally regarding active duty military currently serving yet our representatives and senators continue to support the war. I suppose as long as others are willing to pay the price, why not? So much for "Utah values!"
Steve,
Does this impact the disposal of embryos by fertility clinics? Or would killing an embryo by a doctor be wrong, but o.k. by a fertility clinic. Just wondering.
7:10 anon.,
I think you're trying to make a point, but I'm too tired to get it. Sorry. In any event, the answer to your question is that my trigger amendment doesn't address in vitro embryos.
