Gov. Huntsman Endorses Sen. McCain

It looks like Gov. Huntsman has endorsed Sen. McCain for President. I can readily see why the two would be drawn to each other. But I wonder why the Governor would make such an endorsement so early.

I suspect that Huntsman endorsed McCain because he's jealous of Romney.

Jr's thought process probably went something like this: it’s bad enough that most Mormons consider the Marriotts (and not Huntsmans) as the top tier of Mormon Royalty. Now, within the small world of Mormon political royalty, Romney is crowding me out...

I really think that Huntsman is jealous and feels challenged by Romney's growing success and stature. So all he can do is what he has, lash out by endorsing a creepy goof from Arizona.

Gov. Huntsman's endorsement seems to come rather early in the game. I wonder how many of his constituents will align with him on this, or how many will even care what he thinks about it.

A Mormon President and cabinet official won't happen. A Mormon cabinet official might happen with a President McCain.

Jon Jon thinks McCain is going to win. The earlier he backs the winning horse, the better appointment he gets. Ambassador to China? Secretary of State? Or the old Secretary-of-the-Interior route for bored western governors.

Anon -- believe it or not, there has already been a few Mormon cabinet members. (i.e. Mike Leavitt)

Having said that, I wonder if Huntsman is aligning himself with McCain so early in hopes of a possible position in a McCain administration.

I can't imagine many of his constituents following suit. Seems strange not only from the Mormon perspective, but from Mitt's work with Utah leading up to and during the Olympics.

And Paul, I love your portrait of the thought process.

I'm not sure he's rejecting Romney by endorsing McCain. I have a hard time believing Romney would win the Republican nomination. I think Romney could be a great running mate, perhaps to McCain.

Anon 1 meant that there wouldn't be a Mormon cabinet official with a Mormon President, not that there would never be one. We all know there have been a few of those.

I just think it's weird that gov. huntsman would endorse ANYONE this early, as if that endorsement would matter, anyway.

Also, I find it strange that gov. huntsman's father would pour so much money into a romney presidency (over $100K) and his lt. governor (herbert) would host a million-dollar fundraiser (june, 2006) in honor of mitt's presidential run.....all the while, gov. huntsman was poised to take an alternative approach.

It just seems weird.

As a state delegate I voted for Governor Huntsman and think he is doing a great job. So I have nothing against The Governor and anyone has the right to endorse anyone they wish and as early as they wish to. I personally however agree with his father when he said in an interview on "YOUR WORLD W/ NEIL CAVUTO" that "I think Mitt has a wonderful chance. . . .Mitt is one of the most outstanding young men. He is articulate. He is bright. He is knowledgeable. . . . . I want to tell you, Mitt is going to be an all-star, when it comes to 2008." In answer to the question, "Do you think he will be the next president?" "I think he has a very good chance at it. I'm working hard for him."
