That Hurts

I just got home from wonderful graduation ceremonies at Dixie State College and decided to read the paper. An article describing last night's inauguration ceremony for President Lee Caldwell ended with this quote: "Everyone's happy - except with the Legislature that didn't give us the money we want."

Ouch.

That is an inappropriate comment to make. College speeches should be about inspiring others, not forums for political discours. The speaker may have been partially right, but it does not excuse it a bit.

I think my entry was less than clear. President Caldwell did not make the comment. Rather, the article was quoting someone else.

OOPS! Read it too fast. MY fault, not yours.

Still, it shouldn't have been in the paper, the article should have been focused on the graduates and ceremony only, not quote some snot-nosed punk.

It reminds me of the time when they had a whole bunch of Hall-of-Fmers come to the baseball all-star game. I was going to get a chance to see them interview some of the baseball heroes I read about while growing up--especially one like Sandy Koufax who almost never gives interviews. He was on deck and then who should they choose but PETE ROSE!!!! And it went on and on and on and on about his troubles. I've hated Jim Gray and Pete ever since :) for ruining my chance to see my heroes.

After my dad and I went the rounds on whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, I'm not about to touch that one. But I do note in passing that he had more hits than anyone else who ever played the game. There is no excuse for Jim Gray though.

One of the great thrills I've had in watching sports was to be there to see Nolan Ryan break Koufax's no-hitter record.
