Cottage Meetings
Wednesday, elected officials from Salt Lake County and Utah County set up several cottage meetings for the campaign. Two things are very clear. One, I'm going to have to get serious about exercising. (Lots of eating on the campaign trail.) Two, people are eager for change.
Volunteers continue to join up in significant numbers. I was talking with one man I had never before met. He said he greatly appreciated the past service we've had in the Senate, but he thought it was time for a change. He committed to help us in his community, and, then, he wrote the campaign a check for $2,000.
Today, I was driving down the street, and a woman jumped out in front of my car. I slowed down, waved, and started swerving around her. She moved out further in front of my car and motioned for me to pull over. I pulled over and rolled down the window. She handed me $100 and said, "Let's win this thing!"
I agree. Let's win this thing!
Money is fine; we'll need a little, and I greatly appreciate those who have given and those who will give. But we're not going to win this thing with money. We're going to win it with people. We want volunteers who will talk to friends and neighbors. We want people who believe it's time for change and who are willing to put in a little work to make it happen.
We're scheduling cottage meetings throughout the state. If you'd like to attend one or host one, please contact us. Let's win this thing!

Steve, You need to get Senator Hatch to answer questions about his relationship with Monzer Hourani. Just try googling Orrin Hatch and Monzer Hourani and see what you get. It isn't pretty. Now my take is that Hatch is really kind of softhearted about Monzer but Monzer is a cunning little user and Hatch is just too " not bright" to get it. Htch will bend over backward for Monzer but try getting him to do anything else for a constituent, hah. He has the laziest staff you'll ever talk to.
You MUST 60% in convention to win, Rep. Urquhart - you know that.
In order to do so, you have GOT to recruit a significant amount of pure "Steve Delegates" - delegates to convention are an interesting bunch.
Last year, every candidate for Governor freaked out that Fred was going to win because the delegates kept accepting invitations to events he hosted.
Clearly, the result of the convention lends itself to a simple trend:
Money does not buy votes.
Think of this: Huntsman and Karras "gave" delegates virtually nothing in terms of tangible "prizes" - yet they won.
Fred spent more money during the convention process than Huntsman did over the course of the convention, the Primary Election and the General Election.
Just get your people (and remember that there is NOONE in Utah who "didn't vote for you in your House race" and who won't "vote for you for U.S. Senator") - take what people tell you with a grain of salt.
Also, make sure that the people who staff your campaign know what they're doing - every victory in a campaign is won by the people who work for the candidate.
Last note - be gracious in either victory or defeat....think about your political future.
Anyway, good luck.
You're going to need more than a little money, Steve.
You MUST win 50% in the primary to beat Hatch, because you can't win at convention.
your campaign report from 2004 shows that you raised about $18,000 and that two thirds of that money was from the sort of corporate donations that are prohibited by the stricter ethics laws that apply to federal campaign contributions.
For this primary you need to raise about $1 million by April of next year. That's at least $125,000 per month or over $4000 per day, every single day (except Sundays).
And you can't expect the corporation PACs to get behind you here, so you need to raise most of it from individuals. As a matter of fact, what are you doing reading this comment at this moment? You should be on the phone dialing for dollars right now!
Thanks for the suggestions.
1, I am well aware of Mr. Hourani. Though I do appreciate your suggestion, it is becoming apparent to me that people know it is time for change. They simply need to be shown that I will do a good job in the Senate.
2, good advice. Also, you made me smile. Every race I've had (including House leadership), I've known within 1 or 2% where I was going to end up. But, you're right, it is funny after the fact how my numbers seem to approach 100% when people tell me how they voted. Probably some hanging chads or something.
3, big task, isn't it?
I have had direct contact with Monzer Haurani was involved in fraud case in which he embezzled 2 million, you should have heard some of his lies and stories to weezle out. During the project he spoke often of his relationship with Sen. Hatch
